By far the most important component when it comes to fishing sunglasses, your lenses can make or break your experience. So what should you look for when choosing the right lens?
Open water, as peaceful as it is, is one of the biggest strains on the eye. The reflective nature amplifies light as it bounces up off the surface. No matter if you’re fishing in blazing sun, or on a dull, overcast day, eye fatigue can be a consequence of extended exposure to glare and reflections. Polarised lenses combat this by blocking horizontal light (reflections). This means that the lenses will cut through any light which reflects up off the water, enhancing your vision and giving your eyes less work to do throughout the day. For this reason, polarised lenses are what you should be prioritising for the open water. One thing to note with polarised lenses, is that they can make it difficult to read digital screens. So, if you are constantly using devices such as GPS’ or your phone, this may be a potential drawback.
Designed for the open water, Revo Blue Water Polarised lenses uses the mirror coating to reduce blue light transmission while showing all colours in their true form. Cutting through glare, these lenses are perfect for long stretches, reducing eye fatigue significantly. The Revo Blue Water Polarised lenses are one of the most effective fishing lenses, especially on relentlessly sunny days.
Revo’s Evergreen lens cuts through glare like no other. A polarised, brown based lens warms all colours on those dull, grey days, granting you the ability to distinguish between objects far easier. A subtle green mirror coating enhances contrast and reduces glare further, increasing visual clarity. These lenses are designed for natures earthy tones and are extremely effective on the water.
We can’t talk about fishing lenses without bringing up Oakley’s Prizm™ Deep Water Polarised lenses. Designed to filter out the shades of blue that overwhelm your vision on open water, they improve colour contrast, boosting greens and reds to give you a better view of what’s going on down below. They keep whites bright, so you won’t miss the flash of a fish.

Photochromic lenses automatically adjust to changing light conditions. When exposed to bright sunlight, the lenses darken, providing more protection, and when the light dims the lenses become clearer to enhance visibility. For anglers, this means you don’t have to swap out sunglasses as the sun rises or sets, or as you move between shaded areas and open water. These lenses are recommended for long trips where the light conditions may change throughout.
The material of your lenses has great impact on durability, clarity, and overall performance. The two most common materials used in sunglasses are:
Glass: Glass lenses offer superior clarity. They're heavier than other materials but provide the best optical quality.
Polycarbonate: These lenses are lightweight, impact and shatter resistant, while offering good optical clarity. They're a popular choice among most sports eyewear, due to the durability and endurance of the lens.
If you wear prescription glasses, we have a wide range of prescription friendly frames suitable for fishing. Our in-house lab can fit custom made lenses to your prescription. Simply choose the frame you want, click ‘ADD PRESCRIPTION LENSES’ and follow the steps. This ensures that you get all the benefits from your sunglasses, without compromising on vision.

Different lens colours can benefit different conditions and environments. Here is what we suggest to get the most out of your eyewear:
Copper/Amber
Softer-tinted, these lenses are perfect for inshore and freshwater fishing, as they are best in shallow waters, enhancing contrast and allowing you to spot fish easier. Copper lenses are beneficial when dealing with grey skies and low light environments, as their lighter shade brightens your surroundings, compared to a darker lens.
Grey
Neutral grey lenses are perfect for offshore fishing where the sun is most intense. Outstanding glare reduction and true colour perception, make them ideal for long days on open water. Grey lenses offer the best brightness protection.
Yellow
Yellow lenses are made for low-light conditions, such as mornings, evenings, or dull, overcast days. They can counteract blue light and brighten your environment, when it is most needed.
Green
Green lenses can enhance contrast in murky water, making it easier to spot fish. They're particularly useful for inshore or sight fishing in areas with a lot of vegetation.
Blue Mirror
Blue mirror lenses are designed for open water or offshore fishing, where sunlight can be intense, and glare is extreme. The blue mirror coating reflects more light, reducing brightness and helping you stay focused even in blinding sunlight.

Frame shape is not as important when it comes to fishing as it is with more dynamic sports. The priorities when it comes to the frame should be to maximise coverage, comfort and security. To cover all bases, a wrap-around frame is a great option.
Coverage: Frames with a larger lens surface, for example wraparound styles will offer you a wider field of view and extensive protection. They will also protect you from wind and sun disrupting your vision from the sides.
Comfort: These sunglasses are likely to be worn for extended periods of time, so you will want a pair that do not dig into your temples or weigh heavy on your nose. The point of sports sunglasses is to assist your performance, not to need constantly adjusting.
Secure fit: The consequences of your frames falling off your face are far more permanent in fishing as they are in land sports. Look for frames with no-slip grip rubberised ear socks and nose pads, and frames with a personalised fit.
